Annual or perennial, generally fleshy. Stems generally glabrous. Leaves simple, alternate or opposite. Inflorescence various, flowers bisexual, radial; sepals generally 2; petals 3-18, free or +/- fused; stamens 1-many, free or inserted on corolla; ovary superior or partly inferior; styles 208, generally fused at base. Fruit a capsule.

About 20 genera and 400 species generally temperate America, Australia, s. Africa. Some cultivated,
Lewisia, Portulaca, and Calandrinia. (Hickman, Ed. 895).
