ARACEAE
There are upward of 100 genera and perhaps 1,500 species around the world, being specially developed in tropical countries; they are mostly of wet damp, or shady places; many are cultivated for ornament and interest, and a few yield important food products in their underground parts; many contain acrid principles. Herbs, but stems sometimes becoming hard and woody and tree-like in form, erect, prostrate or tall-climbing by means of roots, sometimes epiphytic, a few floating, mostly more or less fleshy, juice sometimes milky.
