Gymnosperms; seven genera and about 100 species of evergreen, coniferous, dioecious, rarely monoecious, resinous trees, native principally to the Southern Hemisphere. Leaves usually flat, alternate, scale-like to linear or broadly oblong; male cones catkin-like, with many bracts, each bract bearing 2 sporangia, female cones with few bracts, usually only 1 seed maturing; seeds drupe-like, surrounded or subtended by a fleshy aril or stalk. (Bailey, Hortus Third, 890).
